Default Yamaha AW 16G

I've seen one of these for sale secondhand and wondered whether it was worthwhile picking it up if I can get it at a good price. It's supposedly 4-5 years old and appears to be in good condition.

I've presently got an old Korg D8 which has a very small storage capacity and the Yamaha obviously has a lot more memory available and also has more channels and inputs so therefore would be more versatile.

But before making any decision, I'd like to hear from anyone who's used the AW16G as to whether it's good, bad or indifferent in practice.

Any comments - much appreciated.

Cheers, Del

I had a buddy who had one and he seemed satisfied. Yamaha don't make crap so as long as it's in good nick the results should be on par with the Korg. Keep the D8 and sync them using MIDI for extra tracks.

The seller is looking for NZ$1200 for this unit. At present exchange rates that equates to US$750-800 for what he reckons is a 4-5 year old piece of gear. Is this a fair price or should I haggle? What would these units sell for secondhand in the US?

I can buy a new Boss BR1600CD unit for NZ$2500 (maybe even a bit less if I speak to the right people in the shop!) which has double the storage capacity of the Yamaha and no doubt more up to the minute spec.

It doesn't do 24 bit and $1200 is about double what it's worth. They came out in 2003. I had one for 2 weeks and then got the opportunity to snare a D16XD...no brainer really. My collaborator also got the AW16G and it's still trundling on. They were $1900 au new but soon dropped to $1400. Oh and the screen is really small.

Thanks for that. I know that these things tend to drop in value similar to used PC's so, for no particular reason, I had a figure of $600/700(max) in my head for this item.

I know when I tried to sell my D8 a year or so ago, I put it on Trade Me and couldn't even get $300 for it - and it cost me around $2000 when I bought it 9 years ago.

It'll be interesting to see whether they seller will reassess the price if he gets no bids at the level he's looking for. It may be a case of them saying 'well that's what I want, take it or leave it' rather than having an eye of how these things actually plummet in value as soon as you walk out the shop door!

THe AW has a lot of limitations. And its learning curve is pretty hard...
The Korg D16XD is worlds and worlds better and not much more cash!!

I agree with the comments. That's a bit much. Multitrackers depreciate faster than cars! Bad if you want to sell but nice when buying. Keep your eyes open.

Interestingly, the seller had a reserve of $1000NZ on this and someone else bought it!!

I had a figure in my head around $600NZ - just as well I read the comments about it and steered away from it!!

Thanks guys!@!

I can now afford to put the money into some better monitors and just work within the limitations of the D8 until I can afford something with a bigger memory and more tracks.
